A Call for Diversity: The Need to Recruit and Retain Ethnic Minority Students in Art Therapy
Awais, Yasmine J.; Yali, Ann Marie
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v30 n3 p130-134 2013
There is a clear need for greater diversity in the field of art therapy with particular attention to increasing the representation of students of color in art therapy training programs. However, little to no data exists on how art therapy programs are actively recruiting for diversity. Diversity in the classroom can offer novel perspectives on theory, practice, and research. Greater diversity of art therapists would allow clients the opportunity to choose a practitioner who identifies as a member of a racial or ethnic minority. Diversification in higher education is made possible by implementing recruitment strategies that have a sound theoretical basis. This report calls for action to address the need for racial and ethnic diversity in art therapy education and training by adapting successful recruitment models and by considering other, specific recommendations.
