In this article, the author describes a self-portrait project that encouraged students, boosted their self-confidence, and got them excited about their artistic abilities--while producing amazing results. This lesson effectively develops artistic ability by compelling students to see that drawing is quite simply breaking down objects into the simple shapes and lines they comprise. It would be a great starting point for older students to become confident in their drawing skills, and to train their eyes to break down complex images. Older students can use their traced portrait to complete another drawing, or even a blind-contour drawing, because the face is deconstructed into simpler terms that are easier to see, understand and copy. This lesson is also a great transition into self-reflective writing. Furthermore, the printed portrait photograph can be used for an additional lesson on value.
