Learning from Exhibitions: Patrick Dougherty, the Stick Man
Johnson, Mark M.
Arts & Activities, v146 n4 p21-24 Dec 2009
This article profiles Patrick Dougherty and features his installation at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. With the help of 100 volunteers and a time span of just three weeks, sculptor Patrick Dougherty harvested the materials and constructed the installation entitled "Lookin' Good! Lookin' Good!" on a lawn adjacent to the entrance of the Montgomery (Alabama) Museum of Fine Arts. Its architectural elements were designed to echo the dome, cornice and windows of the museum building, while the arrangement of the structures mimics the curve of the nearby porte-cochere. Month after month, year after year, Dougherty creates colossal installations. He says he "has a preference for working big." Dougherty is not new to this art form or his preferred medium--sticks. He has created stick-work sculptures around the country and abroad for more than 25 years. His Web site, www.stickwork.net, provides links to recent projects.
