Science Information Storage and Access: Data Management Using Appleworks.
Schlenker, Richard M.
This report describes a data management process that provides users with a systematic approach to document identification, and to information storage and retrieval using the AppleWorks database subprogram and a simple organizational scheme. The functions of this scheme are described and include: (1) taking the user from general to specific information on documents the user has stored; (2) accounting for the storage of start-up programs and data disks; (3) providing built-in redundancy to protect the user against the possibility of document loss; (4) greatly reducing document retrieval time; and (5) offering several hundred different information access codes for use in document file searches. How this management approach can be developed is illustrated through a description of, and an explanation of how each component works in the information storage and access system. It is suggested that users try this system if their current document identification and subsequent retrieval system is not working at the optimum for them. (CGD)
