Student Flow and Curriculum Matrix. AIR 1983 Annual Forum Paper.
Young, Michael E.; And Others
An analytic system for determining student flow in different subject fields in order to produce departmental workload forecasts is examined. The system consists of three steps. The first step, student flow calculation, computes the relationship of enrollments by major and student level from one year to another. This calculation utilizes historical enrollment trends and a simple flow technique to develop the probability of a student with a given major and student level being in another major/student level in the next year. The second step is the construction of a historical curriculum matrix, which describes in credit hours the relationship between students majoring in various degree programs and the departments from which they draw instructional services. The third and final step of the system combines the outputs of the first two steps to produce departmental workload forecasts. Potential uses of the data include: determining what majors and what levels of students are taking courses offered by a department, determining which majors and student levels within student majors have higher or lower attrition rates, and financial planning. Four sample output reports and examples of calculating transition percentages from historical data are presented. (SW)
