Sixty-three learning activities comprise this curriculum guide to conservation education designed for elementary students. The activities enable the teacher to relate the urban child's immediate environment to the ecological problems which confront our world. Four conceptual schemes are used for each of the four grades, K-3: Living things (plants, activities, and man) (1) are products of their heredity and environment; (2) living things are interdependent with one another and with their nonliving environment; (3) Living, natural nonliving things, and man-made non living things are constantly changing; and (4) Human behavior is affected by where and how people live, work, play, and organize their activities. Among the lessons are topics on animals, soil, dress, signs and signals in the city, predicting changes in the city, country life and city life, city noise, and similarities and differences among people. Each lesson is divided into concept, purpose, teaching procedures, extending the lesson into the home, behavioral evidence of achievement, materials needed, and background information. A bibliography of related materials is included at the end of each lesson. A complete bibliography and a listing of sources of films and materials conclude the book. (Author/JR)
