Palace Revolt in Los Angeles?
Fuller, Bruce
Education Next, v10 n4 p20-28 Sum 2010
Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, comes alive when recalling his start in local politics--as a labor organizer agitating for reform inside decrepit and overcrowded schools. In his quest to turn around the schools, the mayor has united working-class Latino parents, civil rights leaders, and big-money Democrats to challenge union leaders. In this article, the author discusses how charter school and Latino leaders push unions to innovate. He captures Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's history with the city's unions and outlines the schism that arose when the mayor pushed for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to open 36 schools to operators including charters.
