Perceived Differences in Continuing Education: A Comparison of Educators and Practitioners
Olson, Jennifer
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Fullerton
Recertification of certified registered nurse anesthetists has become a concern of both the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) and its membership. Even with the concern, little research has been done on attitudes of the membership and how they perceive the recertification process as it relates to adult learning theories. The purpose of this study, which was based on Mezirow's adult transformative learning theory, was to utilize the transformation of practice and process into new skills. A piloted survey was administered to members of the AANA. Analysis of the quantitative data revealed that practitioners and educators believed that (a) continuing education was important to maintain current knowledge and skills, (b) testing in conjunction with lectures and hands-on experiences was appropriate, and (c) lectures should be aligned with adult learning theories. The membership in general was opposed to a national written examination. The results of this study provide the AANA and the recertifying body with information, and concerns voiced by their membership. The findings of the study can also inform educators and lecture presenters of techniques that are informative and engaging for adult learners. It is evident that the use of adult learning theories has the potential to improve continuing education programs and ultimately improve healthcare outcomes for patients.
