In recent years, parents and early childhood educators have become increasingly aware of food allergies in childhood. And since food allergies account for about 150 deaths a year, there is good reason to be concerned. The early childhood program can provide valuable learning for those without food allergies through explanations about why certain foods are avoided or eliminated from the menu and food activities. With proper information, good communication, and a little creativity, responding to food allergies can be an opportunity for education--for children, parents, and staff--in one's early childhood program. This article provides early childhood professionals with important information about food allergies and strategies to manage them in the child care setting. (Contains 11 online resources.)
