Sociological Research in a Military School
Ignat'ev, V. V.
Russian Education and Society, v50 n12 p40-49 Dec 2008
What is the content of a system of sociological support for the administration of a higher military educational institution, and what problems are involved? From October 2006 to February 2007, instructors in the department of the humanities and the social-economic disciplines at Eisk F. M. Komarov Higher Military Aviation School (EVVAU) carried out a sociological survey based in four higher educational institutions of the Air Force: the Iu. A. Gagarin Air Force Academy (VVA), the Eisk Komarov Higher Military Aviation School (EVVAU), the Krasnodar Higher Military Pilots' School (KVVAUL), and the Stavropol Higher Aviation Engineering School (VAIU). The survey involved 350 officers (associates) of teaching departments, scientific methodology departments (laboratories), departments (divisions) of upbringing work and logistics services]. The author's analysis and the experience gained in sociological support for the administration of military institutions permit a number of conclusions. First, the idea of that kind of support is endorsed by the majority of administrators of higher military educational institutions, who see it as an extremely important element in administrative activity, but one that has not yet been sufficiently backed up in terms of its normative and legal aspects. Second, the purpose of sociological support is to help to improve the effectiveness of the military-social process. Third, it can yield the desired result only if there is concerted cooperation in place between the subjects of the administration and the research sociologist (whether permanent staff or not). Fourth, for sociological support to be successfully implemented it is essential that there be a unified conception of the model of administration of the educational institution, and also the place of that institution and the role in the making of decisions, organizing the execution of these decisions and monitoring the results. And, finally, the sociological knowledge that the commander and organizer of administration and the research sociologist must have is substantially different. (Contains 1 table.)
