Technical Education in 2-Year Colleges. HES Survey Number 17.

Based on a January 1993 survey of 347 two-year colleges nationwide, this report describes aspects of engineering technology and science technology education and training in the nation's two-year colleges. Following introductory materials, the first chapter estimates the number of colleges offering engineering and science programs, reviews types of programs offered, and examines trends in associate degrees. This chapter estimates that of 1,325 colleges nationwide, approximately 725 offer engineering technology and 500 offer science technology programs. Chapter 2 focuses on two-year college offerings for fields within engineering technology, finding that the most common field offered is electronics engineering, followed by computer, graphical, electrical, and mechanical engineering programs. Chapter 3 examines the relative emphasis placed by the colleges on teaching applied skills versus fundamental science and mathematics in engineering technology programs, suggesting that for all divisions the emphasis is roughly equal, while chapter 4 describes linkages between two-year colleges and businesses, indicating that one-fourth of the colleges had at least one cooperative arrangement, while one-third had some type of training or retraining agreements. Finally, chapter 5 describes science technology programs in the colleges, revealing that agricultural, chemical, and biotechnology programs accounted for half of the program offerings.
