A New Professionalism in Middle Level Teacher Preparation: Toward a Signature Pedagogy
Previts, Joanne L.; Kleine, Karynne L. M.; Mizelle, Nancy B.
Middle School Journal (J3), v44 n4 p22-29 Mar 2013
This article describes the middle grades program at Georgia College's John H. Lounsbury College of Education, which educates and trains middle school teachers. It describes the school's field-based teacher preparation program in which a mentor leader guides the candidates. The middle grades education program is a two-year, field-intensive curriculum managed through a cohort model. The article addresses four processes or common principles of teacher education outlined by Lieberman and Pointer Mace (2008) and aligns them with four essential attributes of effective middle grades schools as characterized in "This We Believe: Keys to Educating Young Adolescents" (NMSA, 2010a) to advance the search for signature pedagogies in middle level teacher preparation. Figures are also provided showing the percentage of graduates that pass the state's certification test on their first try and who achieve recognition for their teaching excellence.
