Addressing the complexities of families facing substance abuse can help caseworkers in assessment and treatment-planning activities. Some basic information and skills that caseworkers and foster care parents can use in the assessment of addiction and treatment-planning decisions are presented in this training manual. The manual and training program builds upon earlier "Fostering Families" training programs in this area. The topics covered include: (1) Meeting the new client and the role of the practitioner; (2) The disease model of addiction, which outlines the specific effects of alcohol, various drugs, and their interactions with alcohol; (3) Assessment of addiction, including assessment tools for use with adults and adolescents; (4) Working with the addict; (5) Families and co-addiction, which provides guidelines for appropriate relationships with dysfunctional family members; and (6) Eight moves caseworkers can teach to make for more powerful people. Issues related to success for recovering substance abusers are presented as case vignettes. The manual includes detailed instructions for trainers, a timeline for the day, training competencies and learning objectives, teaching materials, a resource bibliography, and an evaluation form.
