Following up a 1987 study that had identified 1,169 entrepreneurial graduates of Minnesota's technical institutes from the 10-year time period prior to 1984, a study was conducted to determine how Minnesota's technical institutes presently promote entrepreneurial competence for their students and how they can help future students. Questionnaires were sent to the 1,169 identified entrepreneurs, and usable responses were received from 361. Among the findings were the following: (1) the 361 respondents came from 71 different vocational programs--with concentrations in the areas of agricultural, marketing/management, industrial trades, and service areas; (2) the entrepreneurs' business operations were relatively small, averaging about five employees; (3) types of businesses were mainly service oriented, but included agricultural, retail, construction, wholesale, and manufacturing; and (4) five key business management competency areas rated as their top instructional interests by the business owners were management of capital/cash flow, use of computers, business planning, marketing skills, and accounting tax procedures. Recommendations were made to emphasize these five competency areas in small business and entrepreneurial education programs, to emphasize business management skills in various curriculum areas, and to promote the involvement of vocational program instructors in business management initiatives in all program areas.
