Cross, Rod – Physics Education, 2021
Points near the top end of a falling rod hinged at its bottom end can fall faster than g. If a rod falls on a frictionless surface then the bottom end slides backwards and the centre of mass falls vertically with acceleration less than g. The effect was simulated by mounting a rod on wheels and filming the result with a video camera. The…

Politis, Diamanto; Gabrielsson, Jonas; Galan, Nataliya; Abebe, Solomon Akele – Learning Organization, 2019
Purpose: This study aims to better understand entrepreneurial learning in the context of venture acceleration programs. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative research strategy was used based on multiple in-depth interviews with 21 lead entrepreneurs complemented with participatory observations and secondary sources. The data were inductively…

Hewitt, Paul G. – Science Teacher, 2019
Part 1 of the series looked at teaching speed and velocity. Part 2 considers the teaching of acceleration in physics. Teachers may find it okay to hurry through the concepts of speed and velocity because they are intuitive. But teachers cannot hurry through acceleration quite so quickly because it is not intuitive. Whereas velocity is a rate of…

Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd), 2020
This is the executive summary for the report, "Accelerating Students from High School to College and Careers: A Playbook for State Policymakers." College acceleration opportunities can set students up for success. But before this can happen, states need to thoughtfully advance college acceleration opportunities that prioritize quality,…

Forringer, Edward – Physics Teacher, 2021
When authoring physics problems, professors may develop an intuition for how much information they need to provide such that the problem has a unique answer and is not over constrained. It is an open question as to whether using intuition leads to a sufficiently broad range of problems. In this paper we discuss a systematic way of authoring…

Schuur, Jolande; van Weerdenburg, Marjolijn; Hoogeveen, Lianne; Kroesbergen, Evelyn H. – Gifted Child Quarterly, 2021
Gifted students who experienced grade-based acceleration in primary or secondary education have to meet the challenges of adjusting to university at a younger age than students who did not accelerate. This systematic review critically evaluates the research on social-emotional characteristics and adjustment of these gifted accelerated university…

Kim, Hyungsook; O'Sullivan, David; Kolykhalova, Ksenia; Camurri, Antonio; Park, Yonghyun – International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education, 2021
The objectives of this study were to investigate the feasibility of applying computer vision techniques and to analyse changes in behaviour and movement of high school students during class. The study is performed over two phases. Phase one focuses on developing a feasible method to use computer vision-based techniques in high school classes and…

de Sá Neto, Olimpio Pereira; Aquino Sousa, Herbert José; da Silva, Rafael Ferreira – Physics Teacher, 2022
We will present a problem-solving method for the dynamics of a projectile that has two perpendicular acceleration vectors through rotation of the axes. This methodology of reparameterizing the two-dimensional system simplifies the speed optimization calculus.

Pendrill, Ann-Marie; Eager, David – Physics Education, 2020
Changing acceleration and forces are part of the excitement of a roller coaster ride. According to Newton's second law, F = "m"a, every part of our body must be exposed to a force to accelerate. Since our bodies are not symmetric, the direction of the force matters, and must be accounted for by ride designers. An additional complication…

Pathak, Praveen; Patel, Yogita – Physics Teacher, 2022
A smartphone magnetometer is used to record the magnetic field of a freely falling point dipole magnet. The recorded magnetic field vs. time data are analyzed in accordance with the spatial dependence of the magnetic field to calculate the acceleration due to gravity g. The experiment gives local g to be 9.79 ± 1.9% m/s[superscript 2].

Dare, Lynn; Nowicki, Elizabeth – Journal of Educational Research, 2019
For high-ability students to develop their full potential, they require evidence-based interventions tailored to their exceptional needs. Educational acceleration has proven effective with many high-ability students, but educators sometimes express concerns about social issues, and such concerns may block access to accelerative interventions.…

Siew Fong Yap – Teaching Science, 2024
In Australia, it has been observed that there have been significant declines in the proportion of students studying senior sciences over the last two decades (Commonwealth of Australia 2017 & 2018; Steidtmann et.al, 2023). It has been suggested that one of the causes for this decline could be a link between students' literacy achievement and…

Metelski, Jennifer – BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education, 2021
Gifted education in Manitoba is neglected by policymakers, leaving gifted students without assurance of access to appropriate consideration in the province's classrooms. The needs of students with intellectual disabilities are addressed and protected by the Public Schools Act, but guidance for understanding and accommodating the needs of gifted…

Buddeberg, Magdalena; Hornberg, Sabine – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 2017
Modern societies are characterised by forms of acceleration, which influence social processes. Sociologist Hartmut Rosa has systematised temporal structures by focusing on three categories of social acceleration: technical acceleration, acceleration of social change, and acceleration of the pace of life. All three processes of acceleration are…

Cross, Rod – Physics Teacher, 2018
The acceleration of a vehicle or a bicycle is commonly used in elementary physics courses to illustrate problems concerning Newton's laws of motion when friction forces are involved. The maximum possible acceleration is rarely discussed, although it is of interest to consumers and racing car enthusiasts, and it is sometimes questioned by students.…
