At present, only incomplete data exist on how black professional women view marriage; more complete information could provide insights into the causes of the increased number of single and divorced black women. To determine the attitudes of middle-class black women, respondents in Detroit and Chicago were administered a questionnaire designed to measure their feelings about mate selection, the black woman's role in marriage, the importance of sex and children, the "economics" of marriage, and the advantages and disadvantages of marriage. Findings indicate that most middle-class black women, whether married or unmarried, prefer to marry financially well-established men, and are committed to maintaining their identity and independence. These women value parenthood, but feel that family planning is essential; most agree that legalized abortion is necessary. The majority also recognize the child's right to question parental decisions about childrearing practices. (Author/CS)
