General education requirements have long been a component of college and university baccalaureate programs. The courses have traditionally focused on the disciplines in the arts and sciences including mathematics, sciences, humanities, social sciences, and the arts. Family and consumer sciences (FCS) programs also offer courses in areas such as child development and nutrition that are included in many university general education offerings. Recently, courses under the rubric of cultural diversity have been added to general education core requirements. FCS programs offer global perspectives in their courses focus on individuals, families, and environments solely from a global perspective. Considering the interdisciplinary nature of the profession, FCS faculty are well positioned to offer courses focused on cultural diversity for university-wide credit. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department at a liberal arts college offers a course titled "Human Needs and Global Problems" in the World Perspectives component of the Common Core. The course uses a sustainable development paradigm to address human needs and issues in developing countries. The course objectives address knowledge of global issues, an appreciation for other cultures, and development of theoretical skills for considering global issues in the future. This course can be a model for FCS-sponsored university-wide cultural diversity courses. (Contains 1 resource.)
