This article examines the discharge status of all clients admitted to an intensive outpatient facility over the course of 1 year, specifically exploring differences based on client gender and ethnicity. The article also argues the need for more culturally sensitive addiction treatment and addresses some alternative approaches. The purpose of the study was to compare the treatment completion rate and the discharge status of women with the rate and status of men and to compare the treatment completion rate and the discharge status of African American clients with those of Caucasian clients. The discharge status of all clients admitted to a substance abuse treatment facility during a 12-month period was examined. It was predicted that men would be significantly more likely to successfully complete treatment than would women and that Caucasian clients would be significantly more likely to successfully complete treatment than would African American clients (the predominant non-Caucasian group treated at the facility). Results of the study indicate there were no significant differences in discharge type between men and women, nor were there significant differences between Caucasian clients and African American clients.
