Quest for Gold. Curriculum Resource Units for Gifted and Talented Youngsters: Kindergarten--Fourth Grade.
Hayes, Donald G.; Dockery, Linda B., Ed.
Ten model teaching units are offered for use with academically gifted students at elementary grade levels. The units are interdisciplinary, reflect a concern for basic skills, can be used in a variety of settings, and emphasize development of critical and creative thinking skills. "All in the Family," by Patricia Wofford, acquaints students with a variety of family structures and the flexibility of these groupings. "Honesty," by Gaye Williams, helps children develop the value of honesty through thinking about and discussing moral dilemmas. "This Is Me--I'm Important" by Alice Land and "Me, Myself, and I" by Linda Whisnant develop children's self-concept. "What's in It for Me?," by Nancy Whisenhunt, teaches research skills. "The Verdict Please: Judging Characters in Fairy Tales," by Rachel Bowman, applies the law to fairy tale characters, to develop higher level thinking, moral thinking, and leadership skills. "Creative Communication with Symbols," by Diana Burch, increases the understanding and use of visual symbols in communication. "Quest for Gold," by Anne Pitner, teaches thinking skills, decision making, and choice making. "'The Incredible Edible Egg' and Other Chicken Scratch," by Marilee Mauser, uses eggs to show fundamentals of survival, nesting, natural instincts, and life cycles. "The Big 5," by Alice Williams, helps make students become more sensorily aware. (JDD)
