Will You Help Me Lead?
Wade, Carolann; Ferriter, Bill
Educational Leadership, v65 n1 p65-68 Sep 2007
Board certified teachers Wade and Ferriter each describe how established teacher leaders helped them break through hesitancy about accepting leadership roles early in their careers. Ferriter was interested in working on education advocacy and school reform, but found only traditional leadership roles like mentoring and running school committees in his school district. Participation in the online Teacher Leader Network--and strong encouragement from network stalwarts--helped him find opportunities more suited to his strengths. A newly board certified teacher, Wade was confident teaching math to children, but hesitant to try training adults. A savvy administrator personally invited Wade into leadership and helped strengthen her skills. Both Ferriter and Wade detail how their mentors built their confidence and connected them to key people. They share tips for how administrators and teachers can draw out leadership potential in teachers.
