Open concept schools were a popular architectural design in the 70s. They were built to provide large areas of flexible space for team teaching with small enclosed areas for restrooms, science labs, and special needs classrooms. Because there are no barriers and no closed doors, an attitude of inclusiveness is created merely by the building's design. Today's world is moving toward inclusiveness, problem solving, and working collaboratively. Students who have been educated in the open concept environment are better prepared to be a part of a workforce that demands the ability to work with others, make group decisions, and explore a variety of avenues for solving problems. Rather than working in a vacuum, students have the experience needed to become a vital part of the world community. In this article, the authors describe the effective results of an open concept school.
