This trainee handbook is designed for a course to prepare workers with safety competencies in order to meet Kentucky mandatory mine safety requirements before entering mines in Kentucky; it is also intended for workers who have been on the job less than 90 days. The guide is organized into 14 chapters. Topics covered in the mine safety training program include the use of the self-rescue device; introduction to mining; authority and responsibility of supervisors (authority chains); entering and leaving mines; mine map, escapeways, emergency evacuations, and barricading; roof control and ventilation plans; rock dusting, first aid; electrical hazards, moving equipment; accident prevention; explosives; health and safety standards, gases; miners' rights and obligations and federal mine safety laws. Each topic is outlined, illustrated where appropriate, and includes a glossary of terms. (KC)
