SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v109 n5 p36-37 Jan 2010
This article describes how the author teaches a fourth- and fifth-grade unit on architecture called the Art and Science of Planning Buildings. Rockville, Indiana has fine examples of architecture ranging from log cabins, classic Greek columns, Victorian houses, a mission-style theater, and Frank Lloyd Wright prairie-style homes. After reading about styles of architecture and materials used for buildings, the author begins the unit by looking at a slide show of familiar buildings in the town of Rockville. Students each select a building they want to study. Using local references, students determine when the structure was built and what part it may have played in history. Together they research and discuss architectural elements, materials used, time periods, and historic preservation. The author encourages students to explore any media they prefer and record their observations in an original artwork that depicts their building. (Contains 1 online resource.)
