NSRC Inquiry-Based Science Education Programs, 2009

In 1985, the leaders of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies established the National Science Resources Center (NSRC) to address the critical problem identified by the "A Nation at Risk" report. Through its Curriculum Development Center and in partnership with its publisher, Carolina Biological Supply Company, the NSRC developed two comprehensive science curriculum programs for K-8 students: Science and Technology for Children[R] (STC[R]), for grades K-6; and Science and Technology Concepts for Middle Schools[TM] (STC/MS[TM]), for grades 6-8. The NSRC designed these research-based and inquiry-centered curriculum programs to align with the National Science Education Standards of the National Research Council. In 2004, the NSRC self-published 12 science books (STC BOOKS[TM]) to add a literacy component to the 4th through 6th grade STC units. This paper provides the modules included in the Science and Technology for Children[R] (STC[R]) and Science and Technology Concepts for Middle Schools[TM] (STC/MS[TM]). An index is included.
