Gender Equity in Two-Year College Athletic Departments: Part II

This article examines the current state of gender equity in athletic programs offered at two-year institutions. Two overarching questions have guided the research done for this article: (1) How successful have two-year institutions been in responding to the mandate of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1964? and (2) How will the principles of gender equity be preserved when revisiting planning priorities for athletics? The remainder of this article addresses these guiding questions through: (1) a brief overview of athletics and funding in two-year institutions; (2) an analysis of participation and resource allocations for a four-year time period between 2004-05 and 2006-07, based on Equity in Athletics Disclosure Report data; and (3) a summary of four cases that emerged in 2008 alleging Title IX violations in two-year athletic programs. The article concludes with consideration of challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in achieving gender equity in athletic departments in two-year institutions. [For Part I, see EJ858604.]
