Singing' the Black and Blues
Fisher, Diane
Technology Teacher, v63 n5 p12 Feb 2004
It is so obvious that the sky is blue in the daytime and black at night, but it took the smartest humans thousands of years of observation, thought, discussion, conjecture, and analysis to finally come up with answers that make scientific sense as to why the sky is these colors. This article discusses light and the scientific research demonstrating the reasoning behind colors in the universe. Sections include: (1) Now ... of all the Colors of the Rainbow, Why Blue?; (2) What Makes a Sunset Red?; (3) Why Does Scattering Matter?; (4) Now That the Sun Has Set, Why is it So Dark?; (5) Uh-oh. No Paradoxes Allowed; (6) Ah. Bad Assumptions; W-a-a-a-a-a-ve Bye-bye; (7) Taking the Galactic Roll; and (8) Bluest Day or Blackest Night: An Activity for You.
