The Relationship between the Student/Counselor Ratio and Schools' Success in Meeting Adequate Yearly Progress
McIntosh, Gloria Sample
ProQuest LLC, D.H.A. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in an effort to improve the quality of education for all students and to ensure that students of disadvantaged circumstances were not unnoticed. School administrators in Mississippi are seeking ways to meet the requirements of NCLB and to increase the number of successful school that meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The intent of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between the student-to-counselor ratio as it relates to schools' success in meeting AYP. The population of the study consisted of all 141 public high schools in the state of Mississippi. The data collected for each school included the school's status on meeting AYP for the school year 2006-2007, the number of counselors per school, and the number of students per school. Statistical analysis was conducted to ascertain if a relationship exists between the student-to-counselor ratio and whether or not a school met AYP. The analysis indicated that there is a relationship between the student-to-counselor ratio and schools' success in meeting AYP.
