Ther are several reasons for studying the ethnic European influence in American literature. First, with the exception of American's native Indians, we are all immigrants who have come to America to seek a better life. Secondly, every American should know something about the heritage of his fellow Americans. Thirdly, by not knowing the ethnic writings of our literature we derive ourselves of a rich body of literature. And finally, through our ethnic literature our horizons will be broadened. Several current anthologies which include European ethnic literature are listed and their contents compared to past anthologies of American literature which include very few writers of ethnic stock.
