Career College Governance: A Study of the Faculty's Propensity to Participate
King, Stephen H.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study investigated faculty perceptions of and propensity to participate in shared governance activities in proprietary, post-secondary educational institutions. The sample population for this study (n = 22) included adjunct and full-time faculty members and administrators selected through a snowball sampling method and initially inclusive of employees of seven different career college companies spread through six states. The study utilized an anonymous Internet-based survey instrument to gather limited demographic data as well as responses, on a Likert-based scale, to 36 statements related to the research questions of the study. The central tendencies of responses were tabulated based on overall population as well as the respondents' membership in sub-populations based on educational role and characteristics of the institution such as presence or absence of a faculty senate body. The study found that faculty members at proprietary institutions see participation in shared governance activities as meaningful and valuable to the institutions at which they are employed. They were motivated to participate where granted the opportunity and desired more opportunities than their institutions granted for participation across the range of potential areas of shared governance, including pedagogical matters, program change and addition considerations, and fiscal decision-making.
