Responding to Economic Dislocation. Assistance Programs for Unemployed Steelworkers and a Directory of District Programs.

This report describes job training and placement programs offered by the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) for members dislocated by plant closings and job reductions. The first part of the booklet provides general information about the Steelworkers' worker assistance programs, including program summary, program principles, the comprehensive assistance center model, the project development process, the history and chronology of the union's approach, internal governance, union initiatives to develop its dislocated worker programs, and policy advocacy issues. The second part of the booklet is a directory of assistance programs for unemployed steelworkers operating in the various union districts. Each program description includes the director's name, local union number, steel company, center name and location, target population, dates of operation, Private Industry Council or other agencies involved, current status, funding and resources, project contact, USWA liaisons, USWA contact, program description, and program results.
