Discussion of leadership functions and practices in the realm of instructional technology in community colleges cannot be limited to the administrative side. Faculty members and faculties as collective bodies have influenced or attempted to influence the use of instructional technology and can claim professionally to have the right to participate heavily in decision making. This chapter addresses the critical role of faculty in leading the integration of computer technologies into instructional programs of community colleges. Although large elements of the technical environment are externally driven, "how" they get used in the learning environment--in teaching and learning processes--is within institutional control. Creation of organizational systems and cultures that encourage faculty participation and expertise ensure that learning variation and technology exploration continue in an era during which standardization and cost/benefit pressures impact institutional choices.
