Six years ago, a small group of liberal arts colleges in New England (Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Middlebury, Smith, Trinity and Wellesley) and their regional accreditor (the New England Association of Schools and Colleges) formed the New England Consortium on Assessment and Student Learning (NECASL). The general goals of this collaboration were to understand how students make important decisions during college, to assess the extent to which institutional policies and practices foster student learning, and to modify those policies and practices accordingly. In this article, the authors focus on interview data from a subset of students from the class of 2010 that address these students' perspectives on their college's commitment to diversity and success in achieving it, as well as how those perspectives changed over time. The students interviewed represented a range of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Each school used stratified random sampling to select six Asian-American, six African-American, six Latino/a, six international, and 12 domestic white students as participants. These students were interviewed three times during their first year and up to once a semester thereafter, affording the authors the opportunity to capture their perceptions as they were occurring. Although students spoke about their experiences with diversity throughout their interviews, in this article the authors examine their responses to a series of questions directly focused on those experiences that were asked in the middle of their first year (February/March 2007) and again at the beginning of their senior year (October/November 2009): (1) In your own words, what does diversity mean?; (2) Based on your experiences thus far, what can you say about diversity at your college? Do you think it is a core value at your college?; (3) Do you think students, faculty, and administration at your college support and encourage diversity?; (4) Has your academic experience been affected by diversity?
