Art enriches, beautifies, and entertains, but more importantly it builds understanding, innovation, and mutual responsibility. Yet, so often with tight school budgets, the first programs to be down-sized or deleted are the art and music programs. But there is good news. Recently, the Boston public schools received a grant of $750,000 from the Wallace Foundation, a New York charitable organization to offer arts instruction to all of their elementary school students. This initiative will assist all of the elementary students in Boston public schools to develop their creativity in the arts, and in addition, it will meet the needs of elementary gifted students with unique gifts in the visual and performing arts. In this climate of interest in the arts at the national level, it is essential that educators in gifted education step forward and tell their stories. In this article, the author discusses how the study of social issues and art can be combined to promote interest and understanding. She concludes that the arts help to develop well rounded individuals, bring personal pleasure, and build valuable skills.
