In recognition of the fact that it is important to understand the contributions of the minority groups to the culture of the United States, this booklet presents the major political and governmental philosophies of the Iroquois League as practiced by the original League, and as practiced by the Mohawk and Seneca Nations today. The booklet may be used as a source of supplementary material when teaching social science courses. Included are many of the ideas about the power of government, the rights of the people, and the implementing of the laws as practiced by the Iroquois League which were incorporated into the Constitution of the United States by the Founding Fathers. This booklet was written specifically to present these major ideas as some of the most important contributions of the Native American Tribes to the thinking of the Founding Fathers of the United States Constitution and to give teachers and students a better understanding of one of the important Native American groups which gave so much to the development of the United States government. Appendices include three short biographies on influential Iroquoians (Thayendanegea, Deganawidah and Hiawatha) and important dates in Iroquois history. (Author/AN)
