Collegiate Aviation and the Community College: A Survey of Post-September 11 Issues
Bliss, Timm J.; Kutz, Mary N.
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v32 n1 p1-12 Jan 2008
Undoubtedly, the aviation industry has experienced turbulent times recently and may face significant restructuring in the next few years. Especially noteworthy has been the impact on collegiate flight programs, particularly those 2-year programs offered by community colleges that often bridge the gap in financial aid and flexible class schedules for working students. This study addresses the lingering effects of September 11, 2001 (9/11) and subsequent events of recent years on 2-year institutions and their flight programs. A survey of 75 2-year collegiate flight programs in the United States was completed in September 2004. The findings of the study revealed that 88% of the 2-year schools surveyed reported that their collegiate flight programs were directly affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks. Respondents to the survey identified such issues as reduced domestic and international student enrollment, increased security measures, increased student flight costs, reduction in fleet size, and increased insurance costs, all of which have had an impact on their flight program. A vital role in aviation education is played by 2-year colleges. Careful consideration of the impact of recent events on their programs is critical as aviation transitions further into the 21st century. (Contains 4 tables.)
