Build It! Festival. Teacher's Guide. Grades K-6.
Gonsalves, Philip; Kopp, Jaine
The activities presented in this guide are designed for elementary age students, and intended to provide hands-on, integrated learning experiences. A learning station format is indicated for open ended activities which include a "Preliminary Activity: Free Exploration First!", an "Introductory Activity: Architect/Builder", and eight activities: (1) "Create-A-Shape"; (2) "Dowel Designs"; (3) "Polyhedra"; (4) "Fill-A-Shape"; (5) "Symmetry"; (6) "What Comes Next?"; (7) "Tessellations"; and (8) "Tangrams." Each activity incorporates a key mathematical concept and other curricula skills which encourage students to develop spatial awareness and become sensitive to patterns and designs. For each activity, the guide provides: (1) an overview, (2) a list of needed materials, (3) information about materials and station preparation, (4) tips on how best to implement the learning station, (5) an explanation of how to present the activity, (6) suggestions for extending the activity, and (7) additional teacher information. Instructions for "Making 'Build It! Festival' A School-Wide Event!", a "Geometric Glossary", a "Resource Books" list, suggested "Literature Connections", and "Sources for Materials" conclude the guide. (MM)
