Chemistry in the Kindergarten-through-Ninth-Grade Curricula: Report with Recommendations. Final Report of the 1982 Invitational Education Workshop (Reston, Virginia, December 3-5, 1982).
The American Chemical Society (ACS) sponsored a workshop for 32 invited participants to consider chemistry instruction in the kindergarten-through-ninth-grade curricula. This document represents the final report of the conference to the ACS Committee on Chemical Education. An introduction presents an overview of the conference and perspectives on K-9 science education. Specific recommendations follow, and are categorized as: (1) implementation strategies; (2) the K-9 science curriculum; (3) in-service teacher education; (4) preservice teacher education; and (5) general conclusions. The texts of the plenary addresses delivered to the participants are also provided. These include "The Status and the Problems of K-9 Science" (Robert E. Yager); "What to Do about Science in the Elementary School" (Mary Budd Rowe); and "Thoughts on Designing a K-9 Chemistry Curriculum" (J. Arthur Campbell). The document also contains a bibliography and a list of the speakers and participants. (TW)
