Serving as a vehicle for raising the profile of and thereby gaining recognition for the important research and development work being conducted in Canada in support of children and families, the "Research Connections Canada" series compiles research and/or development papers as well as background papers, analytical literature reviews, and essays. This issue of the series focuses on children's rights. Following the text of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the articles are as follows: (1) "The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: How Does Canada Measure Up? Summary Report" (Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children), Canada's first five-year non-governmental progress report to the United Nations; (2) "The Child's Right to Play: Position Statement 8, Society for Children and Youth of B.C." (Valerie Fronczek), including misconceptions of the value of play, and recommendations to address barriers to children's right to play; (3) "Gaining Commitment for Child Care through Public Education" (Katherine Covell, Brian Howe, and Kelly Campbell), examining public education as a vehicle to gain public commitment for a strong, nation-wide, publicly funded and universal system of child care in Canada; (4) "The Road Less Travelled: The CRC [Convention on Rights of the Child] and Indigenous Children" (Philip Cook and Natasha Blanchet-Cohen), on the process of charting a road that promotes a better understanding of the rights of indigenous children; (5) "The World Around Us: Qualitative Research on Children's Participation Rights and Responsibilities" (Ellen Murray), describing participatory strategies incorporated into the educational resource "The World Around Us," which can be used as a model when designing resources for children's rights education and can be integrated into subjects such as social studies or language arts; and (6) "'In My World': A Citizenship Initiative and a Progressive Account of Teacher Change" (Rosemary Allan), on a citizenship pilot project using the UN Convention, in which teachers found that children could understand and use the language of responsibilities and rights.
