U.S. Virgin Islands 1983-84 School Statistical Summary.

The 1984 edition of the United States Virgin Islands School Statistical Summary presents narratives, 48 tables, and 7 graphic illustrations of education in public and private elementary and secondary schools during the 1983-84 school year. Tables provide data on the U.S. Virgin Islands demography and economy, enrollment and average daily attendance, revenues and expenditures, staff characteristics, pupil teacher ratio, student nationality and citizenship, graduates, dropouts, withdrawals, retention, and school property values and facilities. Graphs show enrollment, student place of birth, student residence, graduates, and repeaters. Public school enrollment increased to 26,136 or 79.5 percent of student population; private school enrollment decreased 4.5 percent to 6,757 or 20.5 percent of student population. The Department of Education operated 26 elementary and 9 secondary schools with 93.4 percent average daily attendance; approximately 32 private schools operated during the year. Per pupil expenditure for the public schools was $2,694; local expenditures as percent of income per capita was 36.1 percent. Public school classroom teachers numbered 1,683 with 88 percent having at least a baccalaureate degree. Overall public school dropout rate was 2.6 percent. (LFL)
