The Nature Specialist: A Complete Guide to Program and Activities.
Miller, Lenore Hendler
This manual contains a collection of approaches and activities for nature specialists at residential or day camps. It is organized so that the novice may use it to maximize the effectiveness of a camp program. The book is full of descriptions of various field experiments in which children can participate. Comments in section 1, "Getting Started," are addressed to camp directors and include a description of a quality nature program. Program preparation, equipment, and "setting up" are also discussed. Section 2 discusses plants, gardening, and animal care. Section 3 includes descriptions of 71 outdoor science activities for campers, from discovery walks and terraria to "owl pellet study." Section 4, titled "Mixed Bag," offers more participatory activities and general tips about working with young people at camp. The manual also includes quotes from writers, poets, and others about nature and the environment. Also offered are some ideas for competitive activities, rainy day projects, and evening programs. Section 5, the appendices, includes illustrated field guides on birds, insects, and plants; lessons on constructing small science projects; how to care for injured birds; source references; puzzles and games; gardening information; and general teaching tips. There are numerous drawings and photos throughout the book. (TES)
