Redesigning a Research Methods Course for Teachers
Eastmond, J. Nicholls; Louviere, John; Quinn, Kerry
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v52 n6 p22-28 Nov 2008
This article describes how a team of instructional support personnel redesigned an online graduate course in research methods for pre-service and in-service teachers. The course has been taught annually each spring semester since it went online in 2000. The major revision in the online version of the class was to use a series of path simulations, using Guided Design (Wales & Stager, 1978) to help students learn to design their own research. As a team, the authors have designed, developed and taught this course. Their roles have been: Nick Eastmond, course instructor and content expert; John Louviere, web programmer and technical specialist; Kerry Quinn, teaching assistant with responsibility for correcting written assignments. Kerry is the third person over time to fill the key role of class monitor/exam grader, and she has done this work since 2004. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)
