This document reports the proceedings of a national conference to chart the comprehensive changes needed to meet the challenges of undergraduate professional education in agriculture. Part I of the proceedings contains the following 14 conference papers: (1) "Rethinking Undergraduate Professional Education for the Twenty-First Century: The University Vantage Point" (Nils Hasselmo); (2) "Rethinking Undergraduate Professional Education for the Twenty-First Century: The Public Policy Vantage Point" (Ray Thornton); (3) "The Challenges for Professional Education in Agriculture: A Corporate Vantage Point" (Robert M. Moseley); (6) "The Inherent Value of the College Core Curriculum" (Lynne V. Cheney); (7) "General Education and the New Curriculum" (Gary E. Miller); (8) "Agriculture: A System, a Science, or a Commodity?" (Norman R. Scott and Brian F. Chabot); (9) "Educating a Culturally Diverse Professional Work Force for the Agricultural, Food, and Natural Resource System" (William P. Hytche); (10) "Scientific Literacy: The Enemy Is Us" (Robert M. Hazen); (11) "The Priority: Undergraduate Professional Education" (Joseph E. Kunsman, Jr.); (12) "Positioning Undergraduate Professional Education as the Priority" (C. Eugene Allen); (13) "Science, Technology, and the Public" (Peter Spotts); (14) "A Challenge, A Charge, and a Commitment" (Karl G. Brandt). Part II of the proceedings presents reports of the 14 conference discussions on such topics as: teaching and research; including agriculture in K-12 education; cultural diversity; designing an environmentally responsible undergraduate curriculum; curriculum innovation; teaching science as inquiry; emphasizing the social sciences and humanities; teaching agricultural science as a system; and various contexts of agriculture (social and ethical, economic, and global).
