Coretta Scott King Award Books: Using Great Literature with Children and Young Adults.
Stephens, Claire Gatrell
First presented in 1970, the Coretta Scott King Award has become one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on authors and illustrators of children's literature. This book provides information on the award and award winners, and ideas for using selected award-winning titles in the classroom. The first part of the book "The Award," offers a history of the award and lists and describes all of the award-winning authors' titles and authors' honor titles from the prize's inception through 1999. Fiction, nonfiction, and biographies are all featured. Winners of illustration awards are presented in the same manner. Also included are selected biographies of winning authors and illustrators. The second half of the book, "Classroom Applications: Selected Titles with Classroom Activities," is devoted to classroom applications of selected fiction titles. Each book is explored through vocabulary, discussion and study questions, student worksheets (crossword puzzles, character analyses, word search, etc.), activity suggestions for integrating the book into various units of study (math, science, social studies, and language arts), and related materials and Internet sites. (Contains references and an index.) (AEF)
