Development and Implementation of a Bus Driver Training Program.
Buchovecky, John G.
A bus driver training program was developed and implemented in a rural school district in an effort to improve the driving skills of the bus drivers. The program was tailored to meet the needs of the bus drivers and utilized various community agencies for demonstration and teaching purposes. The subject areas included in the program were driver role and responsibility, pupil relations--management and discipline, preventive maintenance, driving fundamentals, defensive driving, accident prevention and emergencies, first aid, vehicle familiarization, and current vehicle code. The practicum was originally scheduled as a 20-hour training program, but, at the request of the drivers, was expanded to 30 hours to include Red Cross first aid certification. Significant improvements were made in reducing the number of bus accidents and discipline referrals and in lowering preventive maintenance costs. The drivers evaluated the training program as worthwhile and beneficial to them in their work. (Author/MLF)
