Relationship Education with Adolescent Parents: Challenges and Lessons Learned
Toews, Michelle; Yazedjian, Ani
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v101 n2 p62-63 2009
In 1988, the Texas Legislature established a pilot program for pregnant and parenting adolescents (Texas Education Agency, n.d.). This program was developed with the goal of enabling adolescent parents to become self-sufficient, responsible, job-oriented citizens. Although the program is not mandated by the state, Pregnancy, Education, and Parenting (PEP) programs exist in many central Texas high schools. PEP programs provide numerous services; however, they do not offer relationship education, a major factor in enhancing well-being and strengthening families (Waite & Gallagher, 2000). Using a modified version of the "Connections: Relationships and Marriage" curriculum (Kamper, 2003), pregnant and parenting adolescents were provided with the information and skills necessary to build and maintain healthy relationships. This article discusses the challenges faced and the lessons learned implementing the relationship education program with adolescent parents.
