Biomolecular Modeling in a Process Dynamics and Control Course
Gray, Jeffrey J.
Chemical Engineering Education, v40 n4 Fall 2006
I present modifications to the traditional course entitled, "Process dynamics and control," which I renamed "Modeling, dynamics, and control of chemical and biological processes." Additions include the central dogma of biology, pharmacokinetic systems, population balances, control of gene transcription, and large-scale biosimulation. The course places additional focus on state-space representations, multivariable systems, nonlinear dynamics, and numerical approaches, since biological systems are often nonlinear and complex. Assessment shows broad support from alumni for the biological course content.
