The purpose of this report is to present the issues surrounding biomonitoring of wastewaters discharged into the Great Lakes Basin. Biomonitoring is the process of using organisms to monitor the toxicity of a substance. The report reflects an interest in seeing zero discharge of toxic pollutants in the Great Lakes region. The report is organized into five sections with the following content: (1) describes different types of biomonitoring; (2) provides descriptions of biomonitoring requirements in three Great Lakes states: New York, Michigan, and Wisconsin; (3) discusses polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in general, and their tendency to bioaccumulate; (4) provides an assessment of how biomonitoring could be applied to the two aluminum industries in Massena, New York; and (5) summarizes and presents recommendations developed from Part IV. The appendices contain a glossary, an Environmental Protection Agency statement made on March 9, 1984 (Fed. Reg. Vol. 49, 9016-9019), and excerpts from the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits for Fort Howard Corporation and the City of Detroit. Contains 30 references. (LZ)
