A Papago grammar, intented to help Papago and other junior high, high school and college students learn and appreciate the language and give linguists an overview of the language, contains background information on the language and the book, two grammar units, a unit of five conversations in Papago, and a section of supplementary material. Text material has been tested and refined in actual classroom application and revised in form and content on the basis of that experience. Each of the two grammar units contains 10 lessons and 1 review lesson. The first unit covers Papago sounds, intransitive sentences, the "g" determiner and yes/no questions, subject pronouns and the imperfective auxiliary, conjunctions, direct and indirect objects in transitive sentences, reflexives and reciprocals, postpositional phrases and locatives, interrogative sentences, and perfective and future perfective verbs. The second unit covers future imperfective verbs; possessives; linking sentences; formation of verbs from nouns and nouns from verbs; subordinate clauses; stative verbs, adjectives, and comparisons; numbers; imperatives; and word order. Supplementary material includes a list of abbreviations and symbols, a summary of grammatical elements, Papago-English and English-Papago glossaries, and the index. Because of similarities between Papago and Pima, the book has been found adequate for teaching Pimas about their language. (MH)
