State and Local Probation and Parole Systems.
National Criminal Justice Information and Statistics Service (Dept. of Justice/LEAA), Washington, DC.
Findings from the Criminal Justice Directory Survey of Probation and Parole Agencies conducted by the Bureau of the Census in late 1976 for the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice are presented. The survey was the first effort to collect information nationwide on the organization and activities of all state and local government probation and parole agencies, and sought to establish a current name and address listing of probation and parole agencies and to obtain information on agency jurisdiction, funding, employment, and client caseload. The introductory text discusses the major survey findings, and describes the methodology, including data sources and limitations. Following the introductory text are detailed data tables. The last section of the report discusses the organization of probation and parole systems and presents descriptive profiles of each state's probation and parole system. The appendix exhibits the mail questionnaire used in the survey, followed by a user evaluation questionnaire soliciting comments from readers. (Author)
