Survey of Parents in a Predominately Latino Elementary School to Determine Factors that Affect Parental Involvement
Bodenstab, Tracy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
Present research has shown that parental involvement has a large effect on student achievement. The current study utilized both casual-comparative and correlation methodology and identified variables that influence parental involvement. A review of literature with respect to parental involvement was presented. The study utilized survey data from parents who had students enrolled in a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school during the 2010-2011 school year. The researcher analyzed the impact of six independent variables to determine the effect each variable had on parental involvement. Significant results were found for the following independent variables: program model, student achievement, parental English language proficiency, and family income. Parental English language proficiency was found to have the greatest impact on parental involvement. Family income was the second most significant predictor of parental involvement. Comments are made regarding these results in the summary of research findings. The data from this study supports the importance of parental involvement and offers suggestions for educators to conduct future studies.
